◆What is an Azuma Bukuro?
An Azuma Bukuro is a traditional Japanese cloth bag made by sewing a single piece of fabric—such as a furoshiki (wrapping cloth) or tenugui (hand towel)—with only straight seams.
Its simple, functional design requires no zippers or buttons, and is known for its ease of use and minimalist beauty.

It is said that during the Edo period, townspeople in Japan, after seeing Western-style handbags, began imitating them using familiar materials like furoshiki and tenugui. This led to the creation of the Azuma Bukuro.

The word “Azuma” (also written “吾妻” or “東”) refers to the eastern region of Japan, particularly Edo (modern-day Tokyo) from the perspective of Kyoto. Thus, the name carries both geographical and cultural meaning.
